Silk-covered straw hats were popular from the 1760s to the 1780s, and appear in period paintings as well as museum collections. Silk covered hats were worn by wealthier women, while working women wore straw hats trimmed with ribbon. This hat is 14 3/4" in diameter, with a 5" diameter crown about 1" in depth. It is covered in 100% silk taffeta in red, with a 100% silk taffeta lining in white. The trim is hand-pleated 1 1/4" wide white silk paduasoy ribbon; the same ribbon forms the ties, which are attached under the front of the crown, as in period examples. I've gently shaped the brim to mirror period images, but the wired brim will allow greater shaping to suit your hairstyle and cap. This hat was inspired by an extant example at the Victoria and Albert Museum as seen in a visitor photo (last image) and documented in their online collections database. http://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O357646/hat-unknown/
