In the 1770s, caned or drawn bonnets were high fashion, appearing in the "Ladies Own Memorandum Book, and Carnan's Ladies Complete Pocket Book" Fashion plate, ‘Twelve Fashionable Head Dresses of 1773’ (detail in the last image). The bonnet worn by the fashion maven in the 1772 "Pretty Mantua Maker" print shows a similar bonnet in black silk. This recreation is entirely hand-sewn in figured black silk with a pale or "Queen's grey" silk ribbon trim. Both brim and crown are caned with reed. About 21.5" the size is not adjustable.
